medical-laboratory-assistant Occupational skill for the role 'medical laboratory assistant' (also: biomedical laboratory research assistant, clinical research assistant, assistant clinical researcher, assistant in medical laboratory, medical lab assistant, medical laboratory research assistant). Use when the user asks for typical medical laboratory assistant work such as: Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.; Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer.; Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices.

Medical Laboratory Assistant

Medical laboratory assistants work under supervision of the biomedical scientist and carry out basic laboratory procedures. They work in the pre-analytical handling of samples such as checking the details of specimens received for analysis, maintaining analysers, loading reagents, and packaging specimens. They also perform clerical tasks such as monitoring the stock levels of reagents used in analysis.

Core workflow

  1. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
  2. Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer.
  3. Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices.
  4. Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
  5. Supervise or instruct other technicians or laboratory assistants.
  6. Prepare standard volumetric solutions or reagents to be combined with samples, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.
