Special Educational Needs Assistant

Special educational needs assistants assist special education teachers in their classroom duties. They tend to the physical needs of students with a variety of disabilities and help out with tasks such as bathroom breaks, bus rides, eating and classroom switches. They also provide instructional support to students, teachers and parents and prepare lesson programmes. Special educational needs assistants supply support for students tailored to their specific needs, help out with challenging assignments and monitor students' progress and classroom behaviour.

Core workflow

  1. Carry out therapeutic regimens, such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of special education instructors, psychologists, or speech-language pathologists.
  2. Clean classrooms.
  3. Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  4. Distribute teaching materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils, to students.
  5. Employ special educational strategies or techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, or memory.
  6. Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  7. Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
  8. Instruct students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and self-sufficiency, such as hygiene, safety, or food preparation.
